Whether you’re wandering around the garden and orchard saying hello to the chickens or fly fishing for trout and salmon on the unfenced river at the bottom of the garden (available by arrangement), there’s a way for everyone to enjoy the countryside here. The interiors have a tranquil cottage-style feel, with rich, dark woods and calming neutral colours. The first-floor open-plan living area is bright and airy during the day and has beautiful views out over the garden and river; in the evening it becomes a relaxing haven when the wood burner effect electric fire is lit and you’re curled up on the sofa with a good book. Walk less than a mile to the local pub for a quick drink or a lunch prepared using local produce. But if you fancy heading out, the seaside town of Bude across the border in Cornwall (18 miles) is ideal for pubs, cafes and restaurants, as well as its famous sea pool. RHS Garden Rosemoor (10 miles) is open year-round and has lots of different gardens and play areas for you to discover. Kids will also adore the Milky Way Adventure Park (16 miles), where your four-legged friend can join you if you’ve brought them along too.
